Annette Rooke, who won £2.4 million on the UK Lotto 4 years ago, still spreads her luck by sending every family member a lucky dip ticket in their birthday cards.

‘Buy as many Rollers as you want… but they won’t necessarily make you happy’

Ron Ullah scooped a jackpot win of £5.177 Million back in Oct 2002, but says although he thought he was given the golden key to happiness, there are only so many holidays, cars and jewellery you can buy before you it all gets boring and meaningless.

After enjoying a lifestyle of travelling between his homes in Cyprus, Florida and Essex, along with his yachts and rolex, he now, 9 years on from his lottery win is once again working running a very successful cake-making business.

At 57 years old, he now commutes from Essex to his shop is Suffolk; a 100 mile round trip, and to be honest, looks like he needs a holiday!

Ron Said ‘One thing you can’t buy is a sense of purpose,’ he says, perched on a stool in Carousel’s caramel-scented kitchen. ‘I’m very hands-on by nature and there I was, with everything my heart desired — except a goal to aim for. ‘If you’ve strived all your life and then, suddenly, what you were striving for is handed to you on a plate . . . it’s weird. It feels fantastic, yet at the same time there’s something missing. ‘When you first realise you’ve got all that money, you’re hit by about 100 emotions. I went cold — I still go cold thinking about  it — then I was euphoric, but then immediately this dark cloud of anxiety came over me and I started to worry. ‘You try to be rational, but you can’t be when you’ve suddenly got £5 million in your account. And I went a bit silly.

He gives an example of that ‘silliness’. ‘I was at a charity auction after England won the Rugby World Cup against Australia, and I bid for a shirt signed by all the team. The price was going up by the thousand: eight, nine, ten, when I hear myself saying “£20,000”.‘Everyone stood up and cheered, and I felt like the bee’s knees for half an hour. But the shirt is probably worth only £300 now.

‘So the Scottish couple who have won this massive EuroMillions prize are going to need all the help and advice they can get, because that kind of money is too much for one person to handle: £161 million is a ridiculous amount of money. ‘It would have been better if the jackpot had been divvied up among several winners — transforming a lot of different lives. I feel for the winners.

‘I took the decision to go public because I thought it would be impossible to keep £5 million quiet. Someone was bound to find out and I wanted to be in control of the way it was handled. But £161 million — it’s overwhelming.’
