The Euromillions is a big draw and Diane Thompson; Chief executive of the UK National Lotto, confirms that recent statistics show record high sales for UK lottery tickets. This is especially good news for the good causes that Camelot give based on National lottery funds.
Diane Thompson recently undertook a tour of Britain so she could visit many projects and sites that have received funds from the National lottery Good Causes fund, one of which was the restoration of the Florence Institute, which cost over £6.4 million and received £3.7 million from lottery funding. The Chief Executive said that is was good to see the lottery making such an important difference to these kinds of projects.
So despite the economic downturn, it seems the lottery and Camelot are thriving. They posted record sales of £5.8 billion for the past year which shows an increase of 7.5 % on the previous year. Over £1.7 billions of lottery money went to good causes, and £2.9 billion was paid out in prizes. Camelot have worked very hard to bring in new players to the lottery through effective marketing and increasing the retail distribution. Last year was the best year ever for the national lottery, which goes against some other world lotteries who have experienced a decline in the amount of people playing.
Here in the UK 73% of the adult population play with an average spend of £3 to £3.50 per week. This means that we’ve got millions of people playing, spending relatively small amounts compared to many other lotteries around the world. Many other lotteries have far fewer players who spend more, like the USA where only 40% of their adult population play with a spend of $20 to $30. Thats’a huge amount of money when times are tough!
Here in the UK we have created 2,700 millionaires, but it’s believed that more than 10,000 have been created through friends and family who have won the UK or Euromillions jackpot draws.
Diane Thompson was delighted that the statistics show continued growth of the UK Lotto and operators Camelot say they plan to keep moving forward through innovation and the need to keep progressing technology.
The UK lotto on Saturday 5th November will go off with a bang and has an estimated £10 million jackpot and the Euromillions continues to be one of the biggest lottery games.
